How to find your style

How to find your style

If you know me, you know I LOVE fashion. And throughout the years, my style evolved. In high school, I had one objective: to be different from my colleagues and to be my person. I wasn’t very intentional back then and didn’t feel confident enough to express my true self and style.

Fast forward to the present moment, my style evolved alongside my personality, and I discovered that who you are and who you want to be are directly related to style. In my relentless growth search, I came across a podcast episode in Life with Marianna that touches on how to find your style and embrace who you want to become. I want to share this with you because YOU might find it helpful.

Your go-to items

It’s natural to default to particular looks and items; it makes us feel we’re on familiar grounds. So, you probably have your go-to items that you repeatedly wear. It might be because you think you’re not creative enough or simply you’re looking for efficiency. So here’s what you’re going to do:

Step 1: Select the clothes you wear ALL the time.

Step 2: Using three words, how would you describe these?

Is it sporty, simple and comfortable? It might be elegant, with accents and neutral colours. If you have more than three words, prioritize your top 3. You might notice that the words change with the season, and that’s okay, too. If you see a big difference between your spring/summer style and your autumn/winter, define a separate series of words; this will ultimately help you determine your overall style.

Your aspiration

Although you have items you wear all the time, different brands, influencers, and mentors might also inspire you. That means that you are naturally drawn to a specific style, so your next steps are to:

Step 3: Create a mood board with images of what you like.

Step 4: Using three words, how would you describe these?

You can do a Pinterest board and gather all the photos that inspire you, or you can use Canva to create your mood board. Like the previous phase, try to describe this style using three words.

Your style redefined

Now that you have defined your personal and aspirational style, it’s time to combine the 2.

Final step: Look at your first three words vs your aspirational ones and narrow it down to only 3.

Maybe you see an overlap, which might help you prioritize, and if they’re all different, think about who you want to be. You want to evolve your style, and although you keep some words or switch out some, it comes down to how you bring those words to life in a way that is a level up from where you were.

Bringing your style to life

When you decide to go shopping, always have your three keywords in mind; they are your guiding principles. And beyond that, Allison Bornstein, in the Life with Marianna podcast, shared a few super helpful questions to ask yourself before purchasing something new, which I thought are an excellent way to keep you focused:

  • “Do I LOVE that piece?” Your body will vibrate when you love something, and your mind will not have to find arguments to support it.
  • “Do I have to purchase something else to wear that piece?” Remember, you want to elevate your style, but be aware of what comes with that. Be mindful of the additional costs the new piece might create.
  • “Do I have something that serves the same purpose?” Make sure you have your staple pieces and focus your new purchases on items that complete your wardrobe and not duplicate too much with what you already have.
  • “Does this suit my style, or do I just love it on someone else?” When you do your aspirational board, some pieces might not fit you well. It is essential not to try to force it just because you like how someone else wears it. It took me a long time to understand that, but when you do, your focus will go to items complimenting you, and it will all flow.

Now you’re ready! Have fun during the process, and when in doubt, go with your gut (you can always return something if it doesn’t go with your redefined style).

xoxo,
Sabina
